Lockout Tag out (LOTO)

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a critical safety procedure used to prevent the accidental start-up or release of hazardous energy during equipment maintenance or servicing.

• Prevent accidental energization or startup of equipment: Ensure that equipment is safely shut down and isolated from all energy sources before maintenance or servicing begins.

Core Principles of LOTO:

2. Lockout/Tagout Application:

   • Apply individual locks and tags to each energy isolating device.
   • Each worker involved in the maintenance or servicing activity should apply their own lock and tag.

3. Verification of Isolation:

   • Test the equipment to ensure that it is completely de-energized and inoperable.

4. Release of Lockout/Tagout Devices:

   • Only the worker who applied the lock and tag can remove it.
   • All workers must be cleared from the work area before the lockout/tagout devices are removed.
   • Equipment should be restarted only after all lockout/tagout devices have been removed and the area has been cleared.

Typical LOTO Procedures:

1. Preparation: Identify the equipment to be serviced and the potential energy sources.
2. Notification: Notify affected personnel about the planned lockout/tagout procedure.
3. Shutdown: Shut down and isolate the equipment from all energy sources.

7. Release of Lockout/Tagout Devices: Remove locks and tags in the reverse order of application.
